Inclusive Pedagogy Academy: Foundations
CU Denver’s Inclusive Pedagogy Academy (IPA) is a program focused on helping faculty create meaningful, effective, and equitable learning experiences for all students. The IPA is now housed in the Teaching Innovation and Program Strategy (TIPS) division and was developed in collaboration with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS).
IPA: Foundations begins with a macro-level examination of larger inequitable institutional and cultural structures in higher education and then narrows in focus with each unit to find ways to better understand and honor instructor and student identity and lived experience, identify strategies to increase a sense of belonging, and enact inclusive policies and practices in our teaching and learning spaces.
Throughout the course, you'll have the opportunity to update your own syllabi, course policies, teaching philosophy, and other course assignments and materials to make them more student-centered and inclusive. You will be asked to engage in some reflection about what you value about teaching and even confront some aspects of your practice that you may want to change to make your pedagogy more inclusive.
The IPA is a blended learning experience that consists of asynchronous online learning and synchronous (optional) remote drop-in sessions. This mix of modalities is designed to give you opportunities for both individual reflection and collaboration within your cohort.
In each unit you'll have:
- a discussion space to share ideas for inclusive practice with your peers
- an assignment where you can start to think about how to apply what you are learning to your own context
- a brief reflection that will help you wrap up each unit and move on to the next
- readings, videos, podcasts and additional resources on inclusive pedagogy
The IPA: Foundations course opens on Monday, February 19th
Join us for an (optional!) online kick-off session on Tuesday, February 20th at 3:30pm and an in-person celebration/wrap-up session on Tuesday, April 16th (time TBD).
- Unit 1: Feb 19-Mar 1 Introduction to the Inclusive Pedagogy Academy
- Unit 2: March 4-15 Identities and Dimensions of Diversity
- IPA will be paused during Spring Break
- Unit 3: March 25-April 5 Inclusive Practices and Policies
- Unit 4: April 8-19 Wrap-up: Assessment and Reflection
We anticipate that you will spend around 6-8 hours on coursework for each 2-week unit. Facilitators will schedule synchronous check-in sessions throughout the IPA.
Upon successful completion of IPA: Foundations, participants will be awarded a badge that they can include in their CV, professional networks, evaluations, and in promotion and tenure dossiers as evidence of teaching effectiveness.
